In 2016 when the movie Aliens celebrated its 30th Anniversary, Fox declared April 26th Alien Day. You’re probably wondering where I’m going with this. On Alien Day fans around the world began celebrating their admiration for the franchise by sharing photos of their memorabilia collections, fan art, cosplay photos, and more.
The last three years I shared something and was looking forward to this year. I documented the process via screen recording and mounted my DSLR on a tripod to record over my shoulder. After editing the videos and creating a few time lapses I was done and ready to share my fan art. However, Alien Day 2019 has passed and I didn’t share it despite looking forward to sharing it. That’s not far off from the kid that did his homework and didn’t turn it in. Any answer I could come up with would just be an excuse.
Since I haven’t shared any art on social media in 2019 and up until this point I would tell myself I’m waiting for the right moment, focusing on creating work that reflects my interests or that I needed to build a buffer of content to share so I didn’t run out of things to share. Two out of the three are good things. I like to think I’m a firm believer in that there’s never a right moment to do anything but that’s a conversation for another day. If any day was the right moment to start Alien Day seems like it would have been the perfect day plus I have a good buffer a work built up. I’m also in the midst of illustrating a mini-comic that I’ve given myself the deadline of June 10th to complete it by. The comic is going to be a part of an sci-fi horror anthology I’m creating.
What it comes down to is fear was keeping my from sharing my art. It seems like no matter how many times you overcome your fears they can find a new way to creep back in if you don’t keep pushing the limits of your comfort zone. This is something I knew before 2019 started yet it happened. So going forward I want to intentionally do one thing to push out of my comfort zone everyday.
